"The biggest British live comedy
show of all time."
The tour began in October
2005 all the way through to January 2007. By the end of the UK tour in
December, Walliams and Lucas sold out the tour to over 200 live shows. When
the tickets went on sale last year they shifted more than 200,000 in a
single day. On December 13th, The British Comedy Awards announced the Best
Stage Comedy went to Little Britain. On January 30 2007, the tour went over to Australia until March 9th '07.
Live Show: My Review
Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham,
England -
14th Nov 2005.
Me and my family arrived at the venue for about 6.45pm so we could get the
merchandise. There is a huge choice of merchandise and is expensive. The
programme costs £10 and a t-shirt £17.50. I spent about £40 on merchandise which
includes a programme (signed), mug, t-shirt, mousemat and poster.
The show then started with probably the best characters: Lou and Andy. Well, not
Andy. Lou came out pushing an empty wheelchair. He was asking the audience
whether we have seen Andy and while he is saying this, from the top of the stage
(right to left) Andy goes past facing the audience in a jet pack then slowly
comes down. Andy then runs straight towards the wheelchair and sits.
The back of the stage was a huge projector which projects each scene on the wall
as something happens on the stage itself. For example, the second scene, Emily
and Flo go past on their tandem whilst the back wall projector projects shops
going the opposite direction to what they are riding.
Emily and Flo don’t actually ride their tandem, there are rails on the stage
floor which pulls them along. This is how each set is done in between each
scene. After a scene is finished, the lights would go off for about five seconds
and at this point, all the set is changing if by magic. Nobody is actually on
stage pushing the objects such as tables and chairs, they just change position
(thanks to the rails).
As the show moves on, we see nearly every character their could possibly be
including the all new Thai Bride. The only scenes which were not shown live were
the ‘Bitty’ scene (because there are about five actors/actresses for this), Dame
Sally Markham and the scene with Jason and his Gran.
During the show, there was a bit of audience interaction including a very funny
scene from Wicky Woo and his crocodile where he gets two “boys” (not girls, and
he makes this clear he only wants two boys), to play the sausage game.
Basically, one of the two people get given a sausage and they have to hide it
somewhere on them so Wicky Woo can search one of them. And what a search! Pulls
him down to the floor and does a complete search.
Another audience participation would be Marjorie Dawes and the Fat Fighters
where one person is brought up to the stage to be weighed (more than he actually
does).
There
weren’t really many mess ups apart from when their head microphones went a
little squeaky and made an echo. He used a hand-held microphone for the audience
participation and when the set moves in on rails, the Dennis Waterman scene with
Jeremy Rent, the table wouldn’t stop coming in (so he made a joke about this).
Apart from this nothing went wrong.
Then when we thought it had all ended, Tom Baker’s voice spoke “wait, we have
missed one more scene”… Dafydd Thomas! This was set in a pub. There was Myfanwy
and a policeman. Dafydd insisted to the policeman that he should be arrested
because he’s a… Gay! Then somehow it started a “gay song”. The disco balls came
in with the colourful back stage projector and then entered Samantha Power, Paul
Putner and David as his dancers.
This was an excellent show and I’m glad I saw every bit of it.
When the show had ended, me and my brother ran out to the stage door for
autographs etc (thinking their will be a que) but there was nobody there. The
three security guards then let me in (ready with my camera and programme) and I
first saw Matt and I think I was star struck. He asked me how I’m doing etc and
I got them both to sign my programme cover and got plenty of pictures.
The next day...
The
following day, I realised Little Britain were putting on another live show at
the same venue. I decided I'd go along to get more autographs (not to see the
show).
This time I took both of my Little Britain script books to be signed.
I arrived at the stage door for about 9.45pm and the show had just ended. This
time, I wasn't at the front of the queue. I was at the back behind about thirty
people but that didn't bother me because I thought I would just be able to talk
to them longer. Which I did. Again, it was a nice welcome with them both asking
how I am and spoke about the show, then I got a few more pictures and they both
signed my script books. Matt did an impression of Andy when he pointed to the
frontcover of the book (seeing himself on the cover) "that one".
I asked if they knew where Paul Putner or Samantha Power were but unfortunatly I
couldn't find them.
I let them know about this website and that I've written a review which has
kindly been put onto the davidwalliamsfans.com website. David knew the admin of
that website and we had a good talk.
David then asked me if I'd gone to the show tonight but I told him it was
actually last night so he said I should have been there tonight as it was far
much funnier and a few things happened (not sure what it could be unless the
Sebastian scene went wrong when all the clothes came off).
Once again... well worth it!
14th February 2006
I
have once again for the third time met Matt Lucas and David Walliams! Now I can
officially say that all my merchandise (books, dvd's, cd's and tour book) have
been signed!
The only downside about this (as people that have already met him may be aware)
the security will not allow pictures taken of the them both. I was hoping to get
a photograph with them both for this site but unfortuantly it was down to the
security.
On a lighter note, I have got plenty of photographs of them both from the past
but for the same reasons that you arn't supposed to take the photos, I have
decided to have just the one image which I took in November 2005 at the show
(above).
Something that I did do tonight which I didn't last time was shake their hands!
I have also given Matt and David my contact card with the website details on
which they said they will soon be viewing.
Will we meet again?...
The answer to that is... yes!
On
Thursday 16th February 2006, I met them for the fourth time and this time, I got
a photograph!
Matt says "Good luck with the website and I will be looking at it very soon".
I was the last person in the queue (on purpose) behind about twenty people.
Security would not allow photos to be taken like the other night but David asked
me if I had my camera on me so we could get a photo because he remembered me
from the previous day. Not just that, but Matt and David have now signed my
Limited Edition Comic Relief DVD and the business card for this website.
I was quite shocked when David asked me if I had any ideas of sketches because I
know they like to think of their own ideas so I had to have a real quick think!
Of course... I was speechless but I just think it's great I was asked that! If I
did have more time... I would have plenty of sketch ideas!
Matt also told me they have written page one for the 'Little Britain' Christmas
Special and are still thinking of more ideas.
May 11th 2006 - Nottingham
Arena
I
expected a slightly different show today as it was being performed in an Arena
rather than a concert hall. The Nottingham Arena seemed a lot more of a lively
crowd with being more people.
Security was very tight at the Arena as no photographs were allowed at any
point. I noticed a lot of people that took a photograph were taken out of the
Arena and had to delete all photos before they could be seated again.
I took my digital camera and finished with about fifteen photographs. No flash
of course! It seemed like a difficult challenge to get a photo with the security
and a few of my photographs were a little blurred.
Now back to the show review…
Once again, it was a great live performance from Matt and David. I noticed they
changed a couple of sketches from when I last saw the show such as the Ting Tong
sketch.
The Dennis Waterman and Roy sketch had to be the funniest as these are the only
scenes that went slightly wrong. Apart from them both forgetting their lines,
Matt Lucas called Dennis Waterman by his ‘real’ name, David! And for the Roy
sketch (the paint shop), someone in the audience shouted out “Margaret!” a few
seconds before Roy was supposed to shout out Margaret which then confused their
lines and ended up starting that scene all over again but was all a great laugh!
The laughs did not stop coming as Matt Lucas,
who kept getting laughter attacks, flew into an hilarious extended version of
Vicky Pollard's 'yeah but no but' with even hints of French and German thrown
in.
The audience got to see many sights of
Walliams' bottom during Anne's performance of Whitney Houston classic 'I Will
Always Love You' in a mock-up Stars in Their Eyes sketch.
The show ended with Daffyd Thomas who performed
a cheesy pop track to the tune of the Pet Shop Boys', Go West.
Just
before the show began and in the interval, the camera crew were filming the
audience which kept everyone occupied. So watch out!
I walked out the Arena with the Little Britain
Tour t-shirt with Lou & Andy on front and all of the 2006 tour dates on back.
There would be no point in purchasing the £10 programme again as I got this plus
other merchandise on the previous show in 2005.
Little Britain is most defiantly a show I will
never forget.

Trivia
The content of some sketches varies
depending on the show's location.
On 7th November in Sheffield, an
obscure joke in the Dennis Waterman sketch was argued over and, due to
public demand, was removed completely in subsequent shows. Lucas and
Walliams apparently want to include it again for the run in the West
End.
After the initial run in 2005, the
Anne and Ting Tong sketches were altered as both of the original ones
had been seen on TV.
The Des Kaye and Marjorie Dawes
sketches both include audience participation.
The show runs for 140 minutes with an
interval.
The show tricks people into thinking
no Daffyd sketch was included. However, as the show ends and expect
people to be leaving the theatre, Tom Baker mentions that there was one
place where the show didn't take the audience, being Wales, hometown of
Daffyd.
The pair do research on the places in
which they are performing and try hard to include that in the show.
Early on in the tour, two sketches
were cut, both featuring lesser known characters: Viv in one and Pat and
Don in the other. Matt Lucas said that this was to increase the pacing
of Act 2.
Live Tour DVD
The live tour DVD was filmed during the
Blackpool Opera House show on Tuesday 9th May 2006 and can be purchased from
November 13th 2006.
Extra bits were filmed especially for the DVD
on 9th May. [view]
XL Video supplied Little Britain's UK theatre
and arena tour, the live rendition of Matt Lucas and David Walliams'
phenomenally popular cult TV show that sold out multiple dates across the
country.
Projected video backdrops were an essential
element of the stage set. It allowed locations and timeframes to morph
seamlessly throughout the energetic set, which leapt from school classroom to
the prime minister's office - and every imaginable location in between - in two
hilarious 50 minute halves.
