Starring: Matt Lucas, David Walliams and David Foxxe.
Actor
Sir Bernard Chumley is presenting a TV documentary series examining the history
of stately homes. The shows are sponsored by Allen's Crisps, and, as a
promotional stunt, they have hidden a 'golden potato' at one of the homes.
Whoever finds it can claim free crisps for a year. At the first house on the
tour, Sir Bernard meets criminal misfit Anthony Rodgers and they decide to
unite, find the potato and start a new life.
This was another quirky oddity from Lucas and Walliams, and though it didn't
quite hit the target it carried their trademark stamp of originality. The pair's
satirical stabs at authority and celebrity carry sting because they seem to be
delivered completely without affection. Chumley, a parody of elder statesman
actors, is portrayed mercilessly as a racist, greedy, pig-ignorant, snobbish
bore, and he is the most likeable of the creations on view.
